Carbon Friction Products

Application Overview

Ballard's AvCarb® carbon fabrics are the highest quality spun staple carbon fabric available. Production involves a multi-step process, as follows:
  • The first process step is the conversion of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to a highly thermoset ladder polymer called Avox™ Oxidized PAN.
  • Then, the Avox™ fiber, the basic building block for AvCarb® carbon fabrics, is converted into long worsted staple fiber yarns.
  • These yarns are woven into Avox™ fabrics designed for the application.
  • Finally Avox™ fabrics are carbonized in our AccuCarb™ continuous carbonization process.

AvCarb® HC grade fabrics have an 88-95% carbon content. AvCarb® HCB grade fabrics are vacuum batch baked at extremely high temperature, yielding a 99+% carbon fabric with graphitic type properties.
In addition to manufacturing fabrics, our diverse manufacturing capabilities and understanding of friction applications enable us to work with customers to offer breakthrough products for their special requirements.
