How can fuel cells be applied in power generation settings?
Early power generation applications for fuel cells include products that can provide backup power or uninterruptible power supply for telecommunications, server rooms and home offices. In the longer term, as the technology matures, we expect to see continuous power generation fuel cell products.

How do I get involved in a stationary power generation field trial program?
For field trials, we work with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) who bring to Ballard specific expertise in understanding market needs, manufacturing development and distribution channels. We do not conduct field trials with individuals.

If you are an OEM interested in establishing a field trial program with Ballard, please contact us at marketing@ballard.com.

Can I buy a generator that uses Ballard® fuel cells to power my home?
Through Ebara Ballard - a jointly owned company with EBARA Corporation of Japan - Ballard is developing a 1kW cogeneration stationary system to meet the electricity, heating, and hot water needs of typical Japanese homes. Limited volumes of this product have been introduced to the Japanese marketplace. As we gain success in Japan, we will explore opportunities to market this product in other parts of the world.

Why did Ballard choose the Japanese residential market as a target for a fuel cell generator?
The 1kW combined heat and power system is an ideal size for a typical Japanese home and can help reduce the electrical load on the existing power grid, while providing heat for both the home and all of its hot water needs. Japan’s high gas and electricity costs make it an attractive market to pursue.

Ballard’s long-established relationships and collaborations in Japan provide access to that market, and the Japanese government is demonstrating its support of fuel cell technology by offering a variety of subsidies to support the development of fuel cell products.

Can I take my home off grid using a fuel cell?
At this time, Ballard is not developing fuel cell systems for use as a primary residential power supply.
