Did Ballard invent fuel cells?
Sir William Grove, a Welsh physicist and patent attorney, first developed the fuel cell in 1839. Then, in the 1960s, NASA used fuel cells to generate electricity for space missions. In 1983, Ballard began development of a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell, and today is recognized as the world leader in developing, manufacturing and marketing zero-emission PEM fuel cells.

What products does Ballard manufacture?
Today, Ballard manufactures a wide range of fuel cell and related products. For the most part, we work with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) who integrate our technology into their products.

Fuel Cells
Ballard builds proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells for a variety of transportation, stationary and portable applications.

  • Carbon Fiber Products

Ballard's carbon fiber products are used in automotive and fuel cell applications. They include gas diffusion layers used in PEM fuel cells and friction materials for automatic transmissions. To learn more about Ballard's carbon fiber products, please click here.

Does Ballard use or demonstrate fuel cell products at your offices?
Yes. Currently, we are part of the five-year joint initiative for the Vancouver Fuel Cell Vehicle Program. Ballard is testing and demonstrating one of five Ballard-powered Ford Focus fuel cell vehicles in 'real world' conditions in British Columbia's lower mainland. For information: Ballard Demonstration Programs

In addition, Ballard demonstrates fuel cell products at tradeshows and conferences around the world, as well as at our Annual General Meeting, held each Spring. To learn more about our upcoming events, please click here.

Is Ballard working on megawatt fuel cells?
Ballard’s development activities are currently focused on fuel cell technologies up to 150kW for which our PEM fuel cells are ideally suited.

How can I become a supplier to Ballard?
Ballard's supplier development program actively seeks out competitive suppliers to enhance the company's ability to manufacture more effectively.Suppliers who partner with Ballard may expect to obtain the fiscal and planning benefits of a long-term relationship. Please visit the Suppliers section for more information on becoming a supplier.

How can I become a distributor of your products?
Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG is Ballard's worldwide distributor of our educational package, designed for post-secondary education training in fuel cell technology. Heliocentris can be reached at 1.604.827.5066.

At this time, we are not actively seeking additional distributors.

Who can I interview about your business plan and management strategy?
Generally speaking, employees at Ballard are focused on the market introduction of the products that we have in development. We do not have the resources to respond to the large number of inquiries or requests for interviews we receive. To learn more about Ballard and our business, we recommend you review our annual report. A PDF of the latest version can be found in the Investor section click here.

Do you give tours of your Vancouver headquarters or other facilities?
Regrettably, no. Due to the proprietary and competitive nature of fuel cell technology, we do not offer tours of our facilities.
